We purchased the property 10 ½ years ago. At that time the owners had horses.
We had no previous experience in farming except that David’s family once had a dairy farm but he’d moved off that at the age of 7
We decided to go organic very early on after having read the fine print on the labels of the chemicals it was suggested we would need to use. We didn’t want to subject the environment, ourselves or our potential customers to these.
We started out with a gigantic pumpkin patch and this was the first vegetable we sold at the Byron farmers’ market not long after it started. From there we have diversified to include most of the seasonal vegetables able to be grown here with varying degrees of success.
In a previous life David was a cook starting out in a country pub in Shepparton; moving to Melbourne and becoming a 2nd chef in an Austrian restaurant. From there he became involved with a company which made flavourings for icecream and potato crisps.
A few years after we married we bought a general store/milkbar in a small village in the Dandenong Ranges. After 5 years there we purchased a similar business near Pakenham, Victoriia. We moved to Mullumbimby in 1996 and operated a small café for 4 years.
We have gone full circle in the life cycle of food and now concentrate on growing the best quality produce we possibly can.
